Biography of Uduogie Micheal Ivowi

Prof. Uduogie Michael Obi IVOWI, a distinguished physicist, curriculum developer, science educationist and administrator, was born in Ayogwiri, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State on 8 December 1941.

  • He had his primary education at St. James’ CMS School, Ayogwiri and St. John’s Catholic School, Ogbona; secondary education at Western Boys’ High School, Benin City and Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo; and university education at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan and the University of Essex, Colchester, England. He graduated B Sc (Hons) Physics from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 1967, M Sc in Quantum Physics and Ph D in Solid State Physics from the University of Essex, Colchester, England in 1973 and 1975 respectively.
  • Professor Ivowi taught Physics briefly at Western Boys’ High School, Benin City before joining the civil service to teach at Government College, Ughelli from 1967 – 1972. He left for further studies in 1972 and returned in 1975 to the Ministry of Education, Benin City, where he rose to the position of Assistant Chief Inspector of Education in-charge of the Ministry of Education Office, Iguobazuwa from 1975 – 1977. He joined the University of Lagos as a Senior Research Fellow (Physics) at the Comparative Education Study and Adaptation Centre (CESAC) where he served as its Acting Director from 1982 – 1988 and became an Associate Professor in 1984. When CESAC was merged with three other bodies into the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) in 1988, he served as the Coordinator of its Curriculum Development Centre and was appointed Director of the Centre in 1990. He was appointed Professor of Physics Education at the Edo State University (now Ambrose Ali University), Ekpoma in 1993 before being appointed Executive Secretary, NERDC from 1993 - 2000.
  • He retired in June 2000 into Foremost Educational Services Ltd, a consultancy outfit based in Lagos, from where he has continued to be very active in educational services delivery and professional associations, earning him distinctions and awards in education; and serving as training service provider for many bodies including the Lagos State Eko Secondary Education Project.
  • Prof. Ivowi has experience in Physics teaching at secondary and university levels, curriculum development and research, in project and professional associations’ management. He holds the fellowships of many professional organizations including the Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE), the Institute of Physics, UK, the Curriculum Organization of Nigeria (CON), the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).
  • Prof. Ivowi is the Immediate Past President a Trustee of the Nigerian Academy of Education, past President of STAN, CON, World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI) Nigerian Chapter, Academic Publications Association of Nigeria (APAN), and Nigerian Association for Comparative Education (NACE). Over the years, he has had over one hundred and seventy five (175) publications in learned journals and books to his credit and provided leadership in educational research and development at the national level, with discernable and commendable results.
  • Prof. Ivowi has contributed immensely in the fields of Physics Education, Curriculum Development, and project management. In appreciation of his contribution to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, STAN awarded him the Distinguished and Sustained Service to Science Education (DSSE), and the Lagos State Branch of STAN established in his honour in 1997 The Uduogie Ivowi Education Foundation (TUIEF). The Foundation has held 21 annual distinguished lectures on his birthday, published these lectures and awarded prizes to students and their teachers in Lagos State to encourage STEM teaching and learning.
  • Prof. Ivowi is happily married and he is blessed with an understanding wife and five amazing children.
